TV-obsessives, musical theater geeks and Steven Spielberg fans, NBC would like your attention. The Peacock network—with nary a hit besides The Voice—would really, really, really like you to check out its Steven Spielberg-produced, Kat McPhee-starring, "grown-up Glee" Broadway-on-television series Smash. So much so they're going and putting the whole pilot online early. Is Broadway about to go mainstream again? Maybe! Anyway, this can't be as bad as Grease: You're The One That I Want!

So what's the log line on the 13-episodes-long Smash? The NYC-based show (they even shot on Staten Island!) follows a creative team (including Anjelica Huston and Debra Messing) as it works up to opening a Marilyn Monroe bio-musical. As you can imagine, there is some drama about who will play the leading lady. So yeah, that means we get the above dancing Yankees [insert your own Whatever Lola Wants joke here]. But it also means a regular scripted musical on primetime that isn't Glee, and that we can get behind. Especially one using New York as its locale, what with the untimely demise of another New York-based NBC show, Prime Suspect.

Wait, now you'd like more theater-based television and can't wait for NBC's offering to actually hit the tube on February 6? No problem, start here and thank us later.
