The history of Broadway is littered with ill-advised sequels that didn't quite work (see: Bring Back Birdie or The Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public) but the biggest sequel of them all, the Phantom followup Love Never Dies (in which the masked musician moves to Coney Island to open the "Phantasma"), will most likely never even make it to the Great White Way. But! It will be playing on 42nd Street. At least a filmed version of it will. Camp fans might want to mark February 28th and March 7th on their calendars!
Note, though that the show screening at the Empire 25 on 42nd Street won't be the original London production of Sir Andrew Lloyd Weber's befuddling mu-sequel! Instead viewers will be treated to the recent, reportedly much improved, revival from Melbourne, Australia. Which means we can expect Australians playing French people who have moved to Brooklyn—the accents are going to be awesome! Did we mention there is a song called "The Coney Island Waltz?" And one called "Mother, Did You Watch?" Seriously, this is going to be silly and almost makes up for the fact that the original Phantom has played 10,000 performances on Broadway. Theater geeks, watch this and try and not giggle:
