He wears pinstripe suits, conjures up demons, and knows how to throw a party. Yes, Beetlejuice, the "ghost with the most" at the center of Tim Burton's 1988 cult classic, is coming back to the land of the living for one night only.
This weekend, Bushwick venue House of Yes will throw open their doors and let local party producers BBQ Films take over with a Beetlejuice Wedding-themed party, and it's bound to be scary good. The place will be re-christened House of Deetz (after the Deetz family), and organizers are bringing in sand snakes, macabre sculptures, the "recently deceased," and some top-notch calypso to celebrate the wedding of Lydia and Beetlejuice himself.
(Spoiler warnings for a 28 year old movie)
Serious Beetlejuice fans will recall that this kind of girl-ghost wedding is not a good thing, and so attendees will be asked to help put a stop to it all while live actors play out scenes on stage. There'll also be drinks, music, and wild dancing. Spinning heads? Severed legs? Probably.
BBQ Films specializes in getting all of the "transportive cinematic details" just-right (this is the team that put together the BLOOD RAVE, after all), and so this two-night event will include a screening of the film, carefully-selected music, a limited edition poster, and the chance to participate in helping to foil the on-stage wedding. There'll also be gourmet popcorn, a photo booth, and the option to buy yourself prime "wedding party seating," plus champagne. The party planners are also encouraging guests to actually get married or at least renew their vows (on Sunday), amidst the undead ruckus with an on-site officiant. Now, let's turn on the juice and see what shakes loose.
Saturday and Sunday, March 19th and 20th; Doors 5 p.m. // House of Yes, 2 Wyckoff Avenue, Brooklyn // Tickets $42.50-65
