As the New York Giants await their flight back to Newark today, mingling awkwardly with morose members of the New England Patriots, the city gets ready to clean up the dozens of tons of ticker-tape that will be bombarded upon the streets of Manhattan Tuesday. Cue up some 80's cleaning montage music!
The Downtown Alliance's Vice President Joe Timpone, AKA "The Confetti King", will be in charge of a staff of 110 workers who will clean up after the Giants ride up the Canyon of Heroes tomorrow morning. Downtown Alliance will also be handing out tons of paper to various offices along the parade route. And you'll be glad to know the ticker-tape is made from recycled paper and locally sourced from a company in Red Hook.
The last parade in 2009 for the New York Yankees resulted in over 56 tons of ticker-tape clean-up for the city. According to this, one ton of paper is equivalent to 12 full trees, so that's 672 full trees transformed into party favors for our triumphant jocks.
