You would think that after so many years the City of New York would be clear that a week has seven days in it (or five if you want to talk "work weeks") and yet it really seems like somebody in City Hall is still confused by that simple fact. As if a Restaurant Week that runs for two weeks weren't bad enough, the city's other big winter promotion, Broadway Week, is also running for a fortnight. Which doesn't mean it isn't a good deal—who doesn't like two-for-one tickets? We just wish they'd call a spade a spade.
Anyway, Broadway Week! If you're a fan of the Great White Way but can never persuade anyone to come join you for the fun because it's too expensive, this one's for you. From January 24 through February 10 if you buy one ticket to any of these shows with the code BW2011 you'll get one free of charge. And a bunch of biggies are partaking, including The Addams Family, The Lion King, Driving Miss Daisy, La Cage Aux Follies, and Lombardi (which Ugg-spokesman Tom Brady liked). So now you can drag your friend to a show and make them feel guilty for letting you "buy" their ticket (what's a white lie among friends? We won't tell).
The only downside we're seeing to Broadway Week, besides the inaccurate name, is that you still have to get that first ticket full-price. So for some frugal theatergoers the TKTS line may still be their best bet. For everyone else? Two-for-one Broadway tickets ain't bad.
And before we drop the topic of misnamed promotions can we just point out that the city is also pushing a "Kids Night on Broadway" (free ticket for children 6-18 with the purchase of a full-price adult ticket) which is actually four nights, February 6-10. Another good deal, another bad name.
