A screenshot of a video tweeted by Missy Elliot praising the subway showtime performance set to her music.
Missy ElliotBetween the warm weather, the increases in vaccine eligibility and availability, and the promise of a summer filled with social outdoor activities, a wary but sincere sense of optimism has begun to sweep through the bruised hearts of New Yorkers. Coming off one of the most traumatizing periods in the city's history, we can all use any ounce of joy we can get—and if you're looking for your injection of serotonin today, then you won't do any better than this video of subway dancers absolutely killing it to a Missy Elliott classic.
This performance by the W.A.F.F.L.E. Crew has everything you could hope for: an effervescent throwback Showtime routine, the futuristic synths of "Lose Control," and mostly exemplary mask wearing. They wisely chose a train car that wasn't too busy so that unsuspecting people didn't have to dart out of the way of their sick moves. And the smooth choreography at the :55 second mark is breathtaking.
It's a 14/10 performance—the only subway etiquette critique I have is that they stand on the seats a little too much, but then again, the subway cars are being cleaned far more regularly than ever before, so this isn't quite the faux pas it would have been a few years ago.
The performance was so good, that Missy Elliott herself weighed in on Twitter: "This video so much energy I was hyping them up through my phone but they SNAPPED Hard!" she said.
The W.A.F.F.L.E. Crew are no amateurs of course—they've been on America's Got Talent and Ellen, and have performed all around the city, both before and during the pandemic. You can check out a few more of their recent NYC performance videos below.
And of course, you wouldn't want to miss out on a subway exercise routine video, would you?
